Intel Unveils Core Ultra 200V Processor: Impressive GPU Performance and Platform AI Power Reaching 120 TOPS

kyojuro Wednesday, September 4, 2024

Intel officially unveiled the Core Ultra 200V series of processors, codenamed Lunar Lake, at a global event on the eve of IFA 2024. Laptops powered by this new processor will officially launch on September 24. The new generation of processors will deliver extraordinary performance, groundbreaking x86 power efficiency, significantly enhanced graphics performance, uncompromising application compatibility, improved security, and remarkable AI computing power.

Michelle Johnston Holthaus, executive vice president and general manager of Intel's Client Computing Business Unit, said, "The new Intel Core Ultra processors set a new industry benchmark for mobile AI and graphics performance and dispel misconceptions about x86 efficiency. Intel works closely with ISVs and OEMs and supports the technology ecosystem broadly to deliver uncompromising AI PC performance to customers."

Starting September 24, more than 20 global partners—including Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo, LG, MSI, and Samsung—will bring over 80 AI-powered PCs featuring Core Ultra 200V processors to more than 30 retailers worldwide.

Lunar Lake uses the Lion Cove architecture for P-Cores and the Skymont architecture for E-Cores, featuring up to 4P+4E configurations. It comes with core graphics based on the Xe2 architecture, codenamed Battlemage, featuring up to 8 Xe2 cores. Equipped with the latest fourth-generation NPU, it can deliver 48 TOPS of computational power, over four times that of its predecessor. The platform's overall computational power reaches up to 120 TOPS. The memory is packaged directly on the CPU to save space, offering configurations with 16GB and 32GB of LPDDR5x-8533 memory. Expansion capabilities include three Thunderbolt 4 ports, 2 USB3 ports, and 6 USB2 ports. As this processor targets the thin and light notebook market, it includes 4 PCIe 5.0 and 4 PCIe 4.0 lanes.

The Core Ultra 200V series includes Ultra 5, Ultra 7, and Ultra 9 models, comprising a total of nine variants, all of which are 8-core, 8-thread configurations that include four P-Cores and four LP E-Cores. The flagship model, Core Ultra 9 288V, features a maximum P-Core RWF of 5.1GHz and a maximum LP E-Core RWF of 3.7GHz, with 12MB L3 cache. It is equipped with Arc 140V core graphics featuring 8 Xe cores and an NPU with 48 TOPS computational power. The processor's base power consumption is 30W, with a maximum power consumption of 37W.

The primary difference between Ultra 7 and Ultra 9 is that the base power consumption for the former is only 17W, resulting in lower CPU, GPU, and NPU frequencies compared to Ultra 9. The Ultra 5's L3 cache is reduced to 8MB, and its GPU and NPU specifications have one less set of compute units, making the differences quite noticeable. Additionally, the last digit of the processor model number indicates the amount of memory included, with a suffix of 6 indicating 16GB and a suffix of 8 indicating 32GB.

Official gaming performance test results for the Core Ultra 200V series reveal that the Core Ultra 9 288V offers up to a 31% improvement in gaming performance compared to the previous generation Core Ultra 7 155H.

The Core Ultra 9 288V also outperforms its competitor, the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 processor, by 16%, showcasing the robust performance of the full Xe2 architecture cores. Intel Core Ultra 200V's competition is not just limited to AMD processors; it also faces strong contenders from the Qualcomm Snapdragon X series.

Most laptops powered by Intel Core Ultra 200V series processors will be Intel Evo Edition laptops. These are developed in close collaboration with partners and launched after rigorous testing to ensure a comprehensive and exceptional AI PC experience. Consumer products with Intel Core Ultra 200V series processors can be pre-ordered now, while commercial devices based on the Intel vPro platform will be available early next year.
