Intel unveiled its new Panther Lake processors based on the Xe3 architecture at CES, and the atmosphere is charged with excitement. The company is seizing the moment to build momentum for the Xe3P architecture targeted at core graphics for the next-generation desktops. Rumor has it that Xe3P-based integrated graphics are expected to achieve a performance boost of about 20-25% compared to the current Xe3 solution. If these expectations are met in mass production, it could significantly impact Intel's competitive stance in the client market, particularly in the realm of integrated graphics and APUs.

According to revealed details, Xe3P will first debut on the Nova Lake platform, spanning both desktop and mobile product lines. While Arrow Lake serves more as a transition to new CPU architecture with older Xe architecture for the GPU, Nova Lake is seen as a genuine successor. Here, the graphics subsystem is no longer merely an accompanying component but emerges as a key element in the performance blueprint.

The insider @OneRaichu reports that the iGPU performance of the Xe3P-12C (Nova Lake version) is projected to be within the 20-25% improvement range. In parallel, CPU multi-threaded peak performance has also seen similar enhancements. Such improvements suggest more than just frequency adjustments or minor unit modifications; they indicate architectural-level changes, including execution unit layouts, cache tiering, more efficient front-end scheduling, and optimized power consumption distribution. For integrated graphics, any generational increase above 20% typically implies addressing multiple bottlenecks simultaneously.

Intel has previously showcased GPUs based on the Xe3 architecture. The Arc B390 was presented in public demonstrations as reaching performance levels comparable to the RTX 4050, showcasing an approximate 82% performance advantage over the Radeon 890M at 1080p native rendering.

In the current lineup, Panther Lake stands out as one of the premier integrated graphics solutions on mobile platforms today, albeit in the Xe2/Xe3 transition phase. A stable 20% or more performance increase with Nova Lake's Xe3P could provide a solid foundation for launching high-performance APUs on desktop platforms for the first time. Intel has traditionally had limited presence in the desktop APU arena, allowing AMD to expand its Ryzen APU series on the AM5 platform.

Interestingly, available data hints that Nova Lake might not feature a singular integrated graphics architecture. It's suggested that media and display modules could introduce the Xe4 architecture alongside the Xe3P graphics computing unit. This innovative iGPU design marks a first for Intel's client products and represents a shift towards more distinct separation of compute, display, and media functionalities in the graphics pipeline, rather than binding them to a unified GPU IP generation.

Currently, Intel has not provided a definitive timeline for the release of Nova Lake and Xe3P. Even during CES, Intel remained reticent about desktop APU plans. However, leaks and roadmap adjustments signal that Intel is recalibrating the importance of graphics architecture in its upcoming client competition. If Xe3P's performance gains materialize in actual products, Nova Lake will not merely extend Arrow Lake's reach but will instead signify a comprehensive integration of iGPU and APU designs.
