Handheld Gaming Devices Welcome AMD Ryzen Z2 Series: Three Models, Three Generations of Architecture

kyojuro Thứ Ba, 7 tháng 1, 2025

Handheld gaming devices leveraging the Ryzen Razor platform have been gaining traction for several years, especially with the popularity of Ryzen 7 6800U/7840U/8840U processors. Now, the most recent addition, the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370, is also making its way into these handhelds.

Simultaneously, AMD has developed a distinct line of processors, the Ryzen Z-series, specifically optimized for handheld devices. This series prioritizes lower power consumption and enhanced energy efficiency, initially introducing the Ryzen Z1 Extreme and Z1 models.

With the official release of the second-generation Ryzen Z2 series, the lineup has expanded to three models, adding a layer of complexity with variations in architecture across different product tiers.

The flagship Ryzen Z2 Extreme model targets premium handhelds, boasting both high specifications and price. It uniquely features the latest Zen5 architecture, combining eight cores and sixteen threads (divided as three Zen5 cores and five Zen5c cores). It includes 8MB of L2 cache, 16MB of L3 cache, and peaks at a frequency of 5.0GHz.

The GPU component leverages the RDNA3.5 architecture with 16 compute units, offering a significant performance boost over its predecessor.

Thermal design power consumption is rated between 15-35W, a 5W increase from its predecessor, allowing manufacturers to customize as needed.

The Ryzen Z2, essentially a rebranded Ryzen Z1 Extreme, caters to mainstream models, retaining the original specifications with no modifications: featuring eight Zen4 cores, 8MB L2 cache, 16MB L3 cache, and a peak frequency of 5.1GHz, the highest within the series, along with 12 RDNA3 GPU cores.

Interestingly, the thermal design power consumption ranges from 15-30W, which is 6W higher than the previous Ryzen Z1 Extreme’s lower limit. However, it remains adjustable by manufacturers.

The Ryzen Z2 Go is designed for entry-level devices, maintaining an architectural combination of Zen3+ and RDNA2. It includes four CPU cores, 10MB cache (4MB L2 + 6MB L3), 12 GPU cores, and a thermal design power consumption range of 15-30W, ideal for budget-friendly handhelds with modest performance needs.

AMD has confirmed that gaming handhelds equipped with the Ryzen Z2 series are scheduled to hit the market starting in the first quarter. Although AMD has not disclosed specific brands or products, insights suggest that Asus and Lenovo will be pioneers in embracing this series, with expectations for SteamDeck upgrades as well.
