Mercury Research today released the latest statistics on x86 processor market share for the third quarter of 2024. AMD is experiencing unprecedented success across the major markets of desktop, laptop, and server, with both desktop and server segments hitting new record highs.

In the third quarter, AMD's desktop market share reached 28.7 percent, marking an impressive increase of 5.7 percentage points over the previous quarter, and an even more remarkable 9.5 percentage points year-over-year.

The Ryzen 9000 series processors have demonstrated an upward trend, particularly with the standout Ryzen 7 9800X3D leading the field, while the Core Ultra 200S series has seen a decline in performance.

Currently, AMD's share in the notebook sector climbed to 22.3 percent. This represents a sequential increase of 2.0 percentage points and a year-over-year rise of 2.8 percentage points.

While this progress is significant, it remains short of the record 24.8 percent achieved in the second quarter of 2022. The competition in the notebook segment is fierce, with the Core Ultra 200V series being notably energy-efficient, and the Ryzen AI 300 series considered relatively costly.

In the server arena, AMD captured 24.2 percent of the market, a modest gain of 0.1 percentage points from the previous quarter and an increase of 0.9 percentage points over last year.

This stable growth is notable, especially given the commanding presence of the newly launched fifth-generation EPYC series.

Overall, across the x86 market, AMD's share now stands at 23.9 percent, reflecting a sequential gain of 2.8 percentage points and a 4.5 percentage points rise year-over-year.

Though AMD still faces a substantial challenge in terms of absolute market numbers, its momentum indicates a promising trajectory for the future.
