Secretly Developed for a Year! AMD FSR 4 Supports AI Frame Generation: Finally Catching Up with DLSS?

As one of today's prominent upscaling technologies, AMD's FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) initially kept pace with NVIDIA's DLSS through its second generation. However, with the arrival of the third generation, the gap has widened, particularly in terms of frame generation technology.

AMD's Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Computing and Graphics Business Unit, Jack Huynh, recently disclosed that FSR 2/3 was not truly reflective of AMD's aspirations. These versions were rushed to market, and Huynh had advised the development team early on that such an approach was not sustainable for the future. Consequently, AMD began new AI-based R&D approximately 9-12 months ago.

Huynh further revealed that FSR 4 will fully support AI-based frame generation and interpolation, greatly enhancing efficiency and maximizing battery life, especially on laptops and handheld devices.

This innovation could indicate that the RDNA 4 architecture will incorporate dedicated Tensor cores to optimize FSR, thereby positioning it as a true competitor against DLSS.

On the downside, this suggests that FSR 4 will likely not be available for existing graphics cards.

While there hasn’t been any official news regarding the next generation of DLSS, it’s highly probable that the RTX 50 series will introduce DLSS 4.0.

Seeing both companies push the limits of this technology would indeed be exciting.
