MSI Unveils Laptop with AMD Ryzen AI 300 Chip at Computex Taipei 2024

At Computex Taipei 2024, MSI showcased a groundbreaking laptop powered by the AMD Ryzen AI 300 chip. This chip leverages the latest RDNA 3.5 architecture and features the integrated Radeon 800M (890M) graphics. Based on available information, it is anticipated that this generation of integrated GPUs will deliver a substantial performance boost compared to its predecessor, the RDNA 3 Radeon 700M.

Some media outlets had the opportunity to benchmark MSI's Ryzen AI 300 laptop on the show floor. It’s important to note that this laptop is a prototype, utilizing the engineered silicon of AMD's Ryzen AI 300 chip. The showcased model is equipped with the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 CPU, which features a 12-core, 24-thread Zen 5 core architecture and 16 compute units of the Radeon 890M iGPU.

Benchmark results indicate that the Radeon 890M operates at approximately 2900 MHz and scores over 3600 points in the 3DMark Time Spy Graphics test. In the Cinebench R23 performance test, the CPU scored more than 2,000 points in single-core performance and over 20,000 in multi-threaded performance, reflecting a more than 20 percent improvement in overall CPU performance compared to the previous generation.

According to MLID, the Strix Halo processor will incorporate a comprehensive cache system known as Mall Cache. This system optimizes data transfers between the chip's components, including the AI engine and GPU, leading to a significant boost in overall performance.

The Strix Halo aims to be the first laptop processor capable of running games smoothly at high resolutions without needing a discrete GPU. Its peak TDP is rumored to be 120W, indicating that it will operate significantly hotter and consume more power than most current mobile processors.

While AMD has yet to confirm the official release of the Strix Halo, its potential performance has already generated considerable excitement. If successfully launched, this processor could deliver superior graphics performance and higher overall performance to thin and light notebooks and other mobile devices.
