More Affordable AMD Kraken APU to be Released Early Next Year: Featuring Eight-Core Zen5 and Eight-Core RDNA3.5

AMD has already released the Ryzen AI 300 series, codenamed Strix Point, for high-end thin and light notebooks. Following this, AMD plans to launch three additional mobile APUs featuring the same Zen5 architecture: two targeting the higher-end segment and one focusing on the lower-end market.

The first of the higher-end models is the Fire Range, which will also be available in the desktop Ryzen 9000 series. This APU boasts up to 16 Zen5 CPU cores and 2 RDNA2 GPU cores, with an expected thermal design power (TDP) of 55-75W, making it an ideal choice for ultimate gaming laptops.

The second, and perhaps the most eagerly awaited, is the Strix Halo. This model also features 16 Zen5 CPU cores but stands out with up to 40 RDNA3.5 GPU cores. Rumors suggest its performance could rival that of the mobile RTX 4070, eliminating the need for a discrete graphics card!

On the lower end, we have the Krackan, also referred to as Kraken Point, which AMD confirmed will be released in early 2025, likely around CES. The Krackan is a more affordable alternative to the Strix Point, aimed at a broader mainstream market.

In essence, the Krackan can be seen as a lighter version of the Strix Point architecture. Its CPU cores are reduced from a maximum of 12 to 8, comprising 4 Zen5 and 4 Zen5c cores. The GPU cores have been halved, retaining 8 RDNA3.5 CU units.

Interestingly, despite these reductions, the Krackan retains a robust NPU arithmetic capability, dropping only slightly from 55 TOPS to 50 TOPS. This ensures it still meets the AI requirements for Windows 11 PCs.

Moreover, the Krackan's memory support is speculated to be even higher, with LPDDR5X memory speeds potentially increasing from 7,500 MHz to 8,000 MHz, although this has not been officially confirmed.
